I find that this year, more than maybe ever before, I am profoundly aware of the subtleties of the Summer months.  In my experience, we have heat and humidity this year, as well as a high level of intensity around us.  </p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">The intensity is seen on the personal level and on a global level!  Even just a short drive is enough to witness the intensity of others and ourselves.  How do you navigate this?! We were able to share a day at the beach last weekend on one of our hottest days this year.  It was such a gift to have this time together and to put into practice all our tools for navigating a hot, sticky day!</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">Mariah and I are both Ayurvedic Health Consultants and also single Moms navigating life with as much Grace as possible. We use our Ayurvedic knowledge and inner wisdom to cultivate balance in our everyday lives.  </p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">In Ayurveda, Summer is Pitta season, when the fire and water elements are at their peak! I am sure you are feeling these elements strongly this year.  Yikes, right?!  We can see the qualities of fire and water in both our physical world and our inner worlds. The hot and sticky days and nights, the air of agitation around us and maybe even within us, and the possibility of volatility, are all qualities of Pitta. </p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">In this light, I am adding a page to my website in which you can access some of my Ayurvedic recipes.  This will be a continuous work, and I plan to highlight just a couple seasonal recipes to keep the site less overwhelming. You can access my Ayurvedic tonic recipe of Pomegranate and Aloe at that site now.  This is a great tonic to consume on these hot and humid days to balance the Pitta element.  This tonic is also great for anytime you consume food that was, let’s say, “spoiled”…. ;)</p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">Additionally, here are a few other tips for staying “cool” this Summer season, and to also prevent the drying out that happens in the Fall from an accumulation of the heat in the body from Summer. Ayurveda loves preventative practices!  Just remember, that the opposite qualities are used to bring balance, for example the cooling properties of a swim in the ocean (or lake or pond), soothe and cool the affects of the heat of Summer. </p><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><strong>Other tips:</strong></p><ul data-rte-list="default" style="padding-left:25px;"><li style="font-weight:normal;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:15px;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><strong>Swimming</strong> is a GREAT form of exercise in the heat of Summer. Keep exercise to the cooler times of day, like early morning if possible.  Also, keep your exertion to half of what you may normally do and consider less intense activities, like maybe a Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga class to balance all the Yang energy of the Summer months. </p></li><li style="font-weight:normal;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:15px;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><strong>Eat light</strong> and cooked meals that utilize the local crops of the season.  Foods to favor are watermelon (eat this alone, not with any other foods.  It is best as a mid-afternoon snack on a super hot day), cucumbers, grapes, any stone fruits, quinoa, fresh summer squash, zucchini, cilantro, green beans, aloe vera juice, pomegranate or cranberry juice, are just a few examples.  Avoid hot, and pungent  foods, and heavy foods.  Digestion is weakened during the Summer due to the heat, so eating more mindfully will aid in less digestive issues and a better transition into Fall!</p></li><li style="font-weight:normal;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:15px;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><strong>Meditation</strong> is also a great tool for “cooling” the body and mind.  There are many mediation practices available!  It is a great practice to try a few different mediation techniques and styles and then commit to the one that works best for you.  Simply lying on the floor, with your knees bent and the soles of your feet on the floor, and focusing on drawing your breath up through your feet into the body and exhaling down through your feet into the earth can be very calming and soothing. </p></li><li style="font-weight:normal;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:15px;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;">Keep a <strong>regular routine</strong>. Commit to getting up at the same time every morning and getting to bed around the same time every evening.  It is so simple and yet so calming for your being. (It’s ok to enjoy Summer too….. just return to your routine often.)</p></li><li style="font-weight:normal;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:15px;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><p class="" style="font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-weight:normal;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'Liberation Serif', 'Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular', Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;color:#000;"><strong>Nature</strong> is also a powerful space to “cool off.”  Put your phone away and go for a gentle hike or walk in the woods. Block off time in your schedule to let go and relax.  This is always a good practice no matter what season we are in, and especially during the busyness of this season. It is while we have space that we connect back into ourselves and rediscover our passions and creativity.
